The Ending of Time and…

The existence of a reality that transcended the material world was precisely the selling point of Madame Blavatsky’s ‘secret doctrine’: ‘In the 21st century this earth will seem a paradise compared to what it is now,’ she wrote. Literature, music and art are the first and most sensitive spheres in which the spiritual revelation will be felt.’ She should know: as she was an artist extraordinaire, not only in the visual arts, but an artist of all life: both the tangible and intangible worlds.

I bought this magazine from one of the those market stalls in Spain.  There were about 5 of them all published around 1905.  The turn of the last century was a special time for the Arts with the advent of abstraction.  Ironically the magazine was written and published in a very traditional way, yet during this time the arts was going to have some great discoveries.  The Arts was about to cross its boundaries from photo realism into abstraction.  Kandinsky and Mondrian were major players during this time and were responsible for the first accepted images of the new art form.

Kandinsky is remembered as the artist to confidently put out the first abstract art work in 1910.

Not only those who lived during this period would be affected by the new in art, but all those who came since them to the present day have never been the same again since this new attempt to change the perception of Art.

Kandinsky and Mondrian were members of the theosophical society (The Theosophical Society is an organization formed in 1875 to advance theosophy) and at that time Jiddu Krishnamurti (Jiddu Krishnamurti – May 1895 – February 17, 1986), was only just discovered by the Theosophical Society in 1909, too young to make a contribution to the arts.1_Kcenter_1     But the founder of the Theosophical Society Madam Blavatsky, would have initiated the process into abstraction through her teachings. Kandinsky was known to carry around a book  written by members Annie Besant and Leadbeater called

Founders of Theosophical Society.

Blavatsky and Henry Steel Olcott in 1888 – founders.

Kandinsky had gone on to write a book called:

But Kandinsky would have known of the book published by Blavatsky called:

Blavatsky herself liked to paint:

Blavatsky and her contribution to the Arts have not been forgotten as it filters through into the present day.  Below is an exhibition by Saatchi (my friend…through his online gallery) only recently in 2010.
